Dimensions of Dialogue: Part 2 (1982) by Jan Svankmajer
I really liked Svankmajer’s work when I was in college. He is a surrealist filmmaker from the Czech Republic. His humor, imo, is really dark and may not be for everyone. Once you get past it, there are so many contextual readings you can derive from his shorts. For instance, this short is about abortion and the literal destruction of a relationship. Some of his past works that I’ve seen and would recommend:
Food (1992) comprises of three parts: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, which examine the themes of over-consumption, vanity/pride, and self-indulgence (imo).
Meat Love (1989) is a good introduction to his dark humor, and the short is about the romance between two anthropomorphic steaks.
Two features from Svankmajer that I thoroughly enjoyed are Alice (1988) and Little Otik (2000). His version of Alice in Wonderland is much darker and not cartoonish like Burton’s disappointing version. Little Otik is the film that introduced me to Svankmajer’s work. HEH, I do consider it to be both a horror and a comedy.
…dope-fiend…
love this animator, just awesome.
